Cairns
2023 — ongoing

Cairns are impermanent, human-made, balanced stone structures that are often constructed as a meditative act or in honour of a person or event. Creating them requires focus, skill, patience and, crucially, time. All of which are in short supply.

This series of images was created entirely digitally — using Photoshop and generative AI — undermining the central intent of the constructions entirely. Furthermore, I inserted objects from the every day which can, themselves, interrupt a well-intended moment of pause such mobile phones; television remotes and mundane items from the home or office.

To be human in 2023 is to be pulled in multiple directions at once — work; family, friends; your health all require your attention — and trying to find focus on any of these in the face of the constant distractions of societal issues, the media, apps and the internet is a challenge few are able to meet.

I hope you enjoy the images. CW x
